Go confidently into the new territory of the New Year

   By Judy Christie

A New Year always fills me with excitement – possibilities, opportunities, choices that may be made.

But it also brings a certain amount of uncertainty, especially in this wild world in which we live.

Without a doubt, as we settle into 2011, we are, to use an Old Testament idea, entering new territory. We change. We grow. We seek.

As we start the year, we find ourselves setting out for new places, heading straight into uncharted lands. Parts of our journey will be planned and anticipated. At other times, we will be hit with unexpected changes. We will be asked to grow into more of who we were meant to be.

As you enter the new territory of 2011, expect the best:

  • Make a plan to move forward and go for it, instead of being pushed or pulled into changes.
  • Make sure the path you are on is in line with your vision for your life. Tweak your vision regularly, taking time to step back and get a big picture look.    Those who assess regularly seem to find it easier to stay on the right path.
  • Anticipate anxiety. Anxiety is part of transitions, so try to get used to it. Reframe your thinking to be more positive.
  • Allow yourself to be excited. Entering the new territory of a new year can open up possibilities you might never have considered. It can show you things you thought you would never see.  It can keep you from getting bored or in a rut.  It can even be fun.

“I will go before thee and make the crooked places straight,” we are told in Isaiah 45:2. So, even when our path feels more like a trail, all will be well.

May you move through 2011 with a thankful heart, wherever you wind up!
